Student life in Ilorin is busy, and it is easy to ignore small health problems until they become big ones. A few habits make a real difference, especially around the hostels and off-campus housing in and around Tanke.

Protect yourself from malaria

Malaria is spread by mosquito bites, mostly in the evening and at night. Sleep under an insecticide-treated net if you can, use a repellent when you are outside after dark, and keep the area around your room clear of stagnant water where mosquitoes breed. Blocked gutters and buckets that are left standing are common culprits.

Be careful with food and water

Typhoid and many stomach infections come from contaminated food or water. Wash your hands with soap before eating and after using the toilet, drink water that is properly treated or sealed, and prefer food that is freshly cooked and served hot. If you are unsure about a source of water, do not take the risk.

Look after your sleep and your mind

Exam periods push many students to skip meals and sleep. Tiredness weakens your resistance to infection and makes you more likely to fall sick at the worst possible time. Eat regular meals, drink enough water, and try not to rely on drugs or stimulants that you were not prescribed to stay awake. If you have felt low, anxious or overwhelmed for more than a couple of weeks, speak to a doctor or a trusted person. It is a health issue like any other.

Know when to stop self-medicating

Taking leftover antibiotics or antimalarials without a test is one of the most common mistakes students make. It can hide the real problem and make treatment harder later. If you have a fever that lasts more than a day or two, or any symptom that worries you, get tested and seen by a doctor.
