Falling sick away from home can be frightening, especially if you are alone. Knowing what to do in the first few hours helps you stay safe and get better faster.
What you can do straight away
Rest, and drink plenty of fluids, especially if you have a fever, vomiting or diarrhoea. If you have a fever or pain, paracetamol can help. Follow the dose printed on the packet and never go above the daily limit. Tell a roommate or friend how you are feeling so that someone knows.
What to avoid
Do not take antibiotics or antimalarials from a friend or from leftover packs. They may be the wrong drug, the wrong dose, or not needed at all. Do not ignore a fever that is not settling, and do not sleep off symptoms that are getting worse.
Signs that you should be seen soon
A fever that lasts more than two days, a very high temperature, severe headache or a stiff neck, difficulty breathing, chest pain, repeated vomiting, blood in your stool or vomit, or any symptom that is getting steadily worse. In these cases, do not wait. Contact a doctor or go to emergency care.
Get ready before you ever need it
Save the clinic's phone and WhatsApp numbers in your phone now, and register for a patient ID so that your details are already on file. Keep a note of any allergies and long-term conditions, and have a friend or guardian's number ready.
